Rally against BJP backing for granite quarries TNN

Madurai: While the BJP has proposed to take out a processionin Melur demanding reopening of granite quarries, People’s Protection Centrehas planned to organize one opposing it. The organization said that quarrieshad caused irreparable damage to environment. Speaking to reporters in Maduraion Saturday, state co-ordinator of the organisation, advocate S Vanchinathan,said that permission should not be given to the proposed `Thamarai’ yatrademanding the reopening of the closed quarries in the region . “It is shockinghow the BJP is coming forward to support the owners of the quarries who hadindulged in illegal practices ,’’ he said. He said that terming the Sagayamreport on the granite quarries erroneous without it being formally released ora discussion held on it was unacceptable. If the fines to erring quarries wereadded to the loss they had caused, the amount would come close to the Rs1.10lakh crore, he said. “BJP state secretary R Srinivasan had stated that30,000 people lost their livelihood due to the closure of the quarries. Whatabout the lakhs of farmers who lost their land?”
